It was reported that the United Kingdom was considering the adoption of a new law prohibiting children under the age of 16 from interacting with strangers in games such as Fort Night and My World. Other countries have taken similar initiatives to introduce new restrictions on platforms such as Roblox and Discord to protect the safety of minors ‘ networks.

In recent times, age verification and the protection of minors have been the focus of the play community. A number of companies, including Sony and Steam, are working hard on the age validation of the hosts and games. In some areas, even stricter restrictions have been introduced to reach a wider user group, such as a California proposal requiring age certification for all operating systems. The United Kingdom may now be considering similar restrictions on playing platforms.
According to the British media PolitlicUK, new restrictions on the use of online play services for minors are being considered. The law under consideration is intended to regulate social media, with a focus on the unlimited rolling and automatic play functions of marketing for underage children. The bill also aims to limit the ability of minors to interact freely with strangers on platforms such as Roblox and My World, which currently have few or no universal age limits.

Rachel de Souza, the British Commissioner for Children, stated that video games were the focus of the bill, given that many younger boys spent more time on games than on social media. The British Government has not yet disclosed what specific restrictions the proposal will contain.
The British reform programme is in line with the approach taken in areas where prohibitions are being considered or have been implemented. The Australian Government was the first country to impose a comprehensive ban on the use of social media platforms for minors, prohibiting children under 16 years of age from creating accounts on Facebook, Twitter and even YouTube. In New York, the United States, in early May, published its own proposal to protect children ‘ s Internet security, and its Child Online Safety Act requires age validation for all online platforms with chat capabilities. The United Kingdom has not yet provided a timetable for the entry into force of its ban.

As public attention to the safety of children in cyberspace grew, some government agencies even took more stringent measures. In recent years, Roblox has been prosecuted for failing to protect child security, including in Los Angeles County, Louisiana and Texas. Valve was also the target of legal action, and in February the State of New York filed a lawsuit against Steam for selling trophy boxes to children.
Numerous lawsuits and new restrictions have prompted many companies to take initiatives to avoid legal disputes. Discord has now confirmed that the age limit function will be implemented in the second half of 2026, and this policy was strongly opposed when it was published. The Call to Mission series also added age verification requirements to around 2025, and Black Action 6 and War Area players need birth date certification to perform games.
